I love the world known as Black Twitter. I truly do!

According to Wikipedia, the joy known as Black Twitter, is defined as follows:

Black Twitter is a cultural identity consisting of “BlackTwitter users from around the world on the Twitter social network focused on issues of interest to the black community, particularly in the United States. Feminista Jones described it in Salon as “a collective of active, primarily African-American Twitter users who have created a virtual community … [and are] proving adept at bringing about a wide range of sociopolitical changes.” A similar Black Twitter community grew in South Africa in the early 2010.

Although Black Twitter has a strong Black American user base, other people and groups are able to be a part of this social media circle through commonalities in shared experiences and reactions to such online.

The gift of social media is that people of color, Black people can create spaces no matter where we are! However, what is so amazing about Black Twitter is it provides a space to talk about everything from current events, revolutionary matter and ratchet happenings!

I love Black Twitter because it provides a place to get information, cultural presence and a friendly dose of ratchet happening!

It is often so hard to find a place in the world as a minority person. While technology is making the world more connected, but is making intimacy difficult. One of the great things about spaces occupied by minority people, there are some idiosyncrasies that are synonymous with those experiences. There is language, idioms and metaphors that are used which are or can only be understood by people in like situations.

That sense of belonging and acceptance is found here! From the affirming, to the concerning, to the hilarious, Black Twitter provides a space we get to breathe deep. And that sense of otherness, of Blackness being ‘bad’, is gone for a moment. The creation of memes and hashtags is only a bonus.

Black Twitter is colonizer free. And it is glorious!
