2020 Year In Review: The Year of Megan

“I can’t talk right now, I’m doing hot girl sh!t.” -Megan Thee Stallion

Megan Thee Stallion: Good News Album Review | Pitchfork

I was alerted to the tour de force that is Megan Jovon Ruth Pete by a friend of mine, whom happens to be the love of my life. With that said, he is a huge music fan and has an ear like no other! So, when he recommends artists to me–I listen.

Yet, I have a soft spot for female rappers.

I remember Monie Love, JJ Fad, Yo-Yo, Salt-N-Pepa, Queen Latifah and Lil Kim. The first time I heard Lil’ Kim, I got goosebumps! I still want her and Eve to do a rap battle. I am waiting on that! But, I digress.

So, when I heard Megan? I will admit–I was skeptical. I really was! I wanted her to be what I wished Lil Kim had been had she been able to do all that she wanted–out from the shadow of the Notorious BIG. I said what I said.

When I heard FEVER, I started writing papers for my undergrad to “Money Good.” And it was over from there! I loved that she was unapologetic. I loved that she owned her body, her sexuality and knew she was a bad bitch, no–let me use her vernacular: She’s a hot girl.

The reason that I stan Megan is because I see her hustle! I see how people have come for her, tried to question her gender (which is trash), knock her talent and even try to lock up her bag from her! When I saw the foolishness with her and Torey Lanez, and how she handled all of that? How she called out David Cameron the cooning AG in Kentucky on Saturday Night Live–who is marrying into Senator Mitch McConnell’s family?

Oh, yeah. She is a Torch. It would be negligent if I didn’t recognize just how amazing that she is! Now, she is a spokesperson for COACH, Revlon, and Savage X Fenty? Oh yes! I am here for all of it. ALL OF IT!

I love she!

One of the reasons why the world at large has a problem with Megan is because she is an anomaly! The entertainment industry loves to package women. It–as an entity–loves to design sex appeal, desire and what people should want.

The ideal ‘sexy girl’ is petite, as light as possible, with an ample chest. Megan isn’t petite. Megan isn’t a light skinned girl. Megan isn’t short–she’s 5’10”. Just like I am. So, that means in heels, she’s better than 6′ tall–as am I. With the cesspool of the internet calling her a drag queen or a transwoman is completely uncalled for!

I am proud of her for all that she has come through, gone through and is still going through! The world doesn’t know what to do with a girl that says ‘put him on his knees and give him something to believe in,’ but knows exactly what to do with a man that tells you to ‘lick the wrapper’.

The world doesn’t know what to do with a Black woman that knows what she wants, an takes no isht! It doesn’t know how to silence a woman that knows how and when to speak up! This year is the year of Megan because I see so much of myself, my girls, and girls I grew up with in her.

As of this posting, everyone is jamming to ‘BODY’ of her Good News album. And the dance is hard! And this is from girl that remembers the Tootsie Roll, the Butterfly, and Peculator! But yet, doing it in my mirror? Reminding myself that I was sexy, my body was mine, and it was okay to enjoy it?

That is a freedom–unless you are a woman–you cannot understand. Black woman from the beginning of our capture, sell, and bartering in this nation, our bodies have been commodity. We have been package and sold–and this is no exaggeration. To have a Black woman own her body, own her sexuality, and be knowledgeable of who she is–and have that be independent of anyone else? That is remarkable.

I am here for Megan!

I am proud of Megan!

The year of 2020 is the year of stanning Black women, because as Nikki Giovanni says:  “If the Black woman wasn’t born she would have to be invented.” That sounds like Hot Girl Sh!t to me!

Get ’em Megan! Get ’em!
