I have been a part of the Bonnet Chronicles Debate (follow @cfstory and @whatjayesaid (me!). This debate has sparked debate, controversy, rage and a further discussion of classism powered by respectability politics! From what I have seen is this debate is that is swirls a lot around three influences:

1.) How you were raised.

2.) The input and influence of the older generations.

3.) How you see yourself.

I was taught not to leave the house with my hair wrapped up! I mean I couldn’t wear braids until I was an adult! But in this conversation, we find the thread of white supremacy—internalized racism dressed up as, “This is what is expected of you to be taken seriously.”

But, who makes these rules? Who has to follow them? Can they be broken?

This conversation is bigger than bonnets.
